A Memorable Evening at Reid Hall – The Lyatoshynsky Trio Moves Paris

May 28, 2025

Despite the rainy Parisian weather, the audience at Reid Hall on May 21, 2025, experienced a heartwarming evening filled with poetry, passion, and musical depth. The Lyatoshynsky Trio – Mykhaylo Zakharov (violin), Susanne Szambelan (cello), and Artem Yasynskyy (piano) – captivated listeners with a beautifully curated program that brought together romantic masterpieces from Poland, France, and Ukraine.

The evening began with Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Trio in G minor – a youthful, virtuosic work that already reveals the Romantic genius of its composer. It was followed by Claude Debussy’s early Piano Trio in G minor, which enchanted with its elegant impressionist colors and refined textures. The emotional highlight came with Borys Lyatoshynsky’s Piano Trio No. 2 – a powerful and poignant composition, rich in drama and melancholy, written during the turmoil of World War II.

The audience was visibly moved by the trio’s intense yet sensitive interpretation – so much so that they would not let the musicians leave without an encore. The applause was long, heartfelt, and well deserved.

The concert was part of the “Ukrainian Resonance” series, curated by Anna Stavychenko (Project 1991), and organized in partnership with Les Amis de la culture ukrainienne en France, KharkivMusicFest, and the Columbia Global Paris Center. All proceeds from the evening support the Kharkiv Opera House, heavily damaged in the war.
